The Yard-O-Led Diplomat Plain propelling pencil is a classic writing instrument, and an original design that has remained popular since its introduction in 1934, when Yard-O-Led was founded by Mr L F Brenner to produce his (then) revolutionary propelling pencil.

Each Yard-O-Led pencil holds twelve three-inch leads at a time – that is, 36″, or one yard of lead – so that as each lead is used up, another drops down to take its place in the tip of the pencil. The thoughtful design also incorporated an hexagonal barrel, so that the pencil would not roll off a sloping draughting table.

Yard-O-Led (now under the overall ownership or Imperial Yard) are still producing these luxurious mechanical pencils in 92.5% sterling silver at their factory in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham (UK), not far from the Assay Office where each Diplomat plain mechanical pencil is hall-marked. In addition, each pen or pencil produced by Yard-O-Led is carefully die-stamped on the clip with its individual serial number.
