The Yard-O-Led Barley Mechanical Pencil is one of Yard-O-Led’s original and classic propelling pencils. The outward design of this pencil remains unchanged since its inventor, Mr L F Brenner, obtained a patent for it in1934.

The patent was for an ingenious idea whereby the pencil could be filled with twelve 3″ leads, so as each one was used up, another would drop into its place at the tip of the pencil. This meant that (12 x 3″) there was a “Yard of Lead” in each pencil – hence the company’s name.

The shape of this pencil is also ingenious – its full name is the “Yard-O-Led Diplomat Hexagon Barley mechanical pencil” because it is hexagonal in cross section, originally to stop it rolling off a draughtsman’s table, but the shape will still perform the same function on your desk.

Yard-O-Led are Britain’s leading producers of solid silver writing instruments, and the Yard-O-Led Diplomat Barley mechanical pencil is now produced at the company’s factory in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham (UK), and is made in 92.5% sterling silver, as its assay marks show. Each quality pen or pencil in Yard-O-Led’s range is individually numbered, a number that is carefully die-stamped onto the clip. The barley pattern on the body of this luxurious writing instrument is hand-engraved, so each one will be slightly individual.
