The LAMY Scala Black fountain pen is an exercise in minimalism, in the best LAMY ‘Bauhaus’ tradition.

The pen is made of steel, covered in matt black lacquer that is in stark contrast to the highly-polished chrome appointments on the top of the cap, the clip, and the base finial of the pen barrel. It should not be possible to combine Bauhaus and Bling, but Sieger Design, who drew up this pen for LAMY, have managed it – when the pen is uncapped, it reveals the long, polished chrome section.

Because of the steel inner construction, the LAMY Scala Black fountain pen is nicely weighty in the hand. It is slightly thinner than (say) the LAMY AL-Star, but is about the same length, and is heavier. It is a comfortable pen to write with unposted.

The LAMY Scala Black fountain pen is produced as a cartridge pen, but will accept the LAMY Z27 converter to enable the use of bottled ink. It comes with a LAMY steel nib that is available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium and Broad, and also with a 1.1, 1.5 or 1.9mm Stub, though there is a slight extra charge for these latter nibs.
