History of Blackwing Pencils

Blackwing pencils were first made in the 1930. After a number of successive corporate takeovers, the brand was discontinued in 1998, but Blackwing pencils continued to be sought after, those stocks remaining attracting a premium price. In 2010 the brand was relaunched with care to maintian the qualities so prized in the past. It is produced in accordance with FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) guidelines. Palomino Blackwing pencils are again one of the most desired brands of pencils.

Are Palomino graphite cores different from other pencil leads?

There are three grades: the Blackwing 602 is the firmest, the Blackwing Pearl a medium and the regular Blackwing the softest. It is fair to say that all Blackwings are on the softer end of the HB scale.

– Blackwing 602 is similar to what you’d expect from a 2B lead.

– Blacking Pearl is at around a 3B graphite grade.

– Regular Blacking is the softest of all Blackings and is at around 4B lead grade.
